The following are just a few of the many Internet job sites available online. These sites are useful for learning about careers, obtaining information about salaries and companies, and for getting a sense of the types of jobs available. However, using the Internet by itself is not the most effective way to find a job.

  • DO NOT RELY ON THE INTERNET TO FIND A JOB. Use job websites as one of several strategies to find the right job, not the only strategy.
  • Start to read job postings BEFORE you optimize your resume. Look for patterns of keywords/skills that employers are seeking, and use the same language in your resume and cover letters.
  • Don't blanket the web with your resume, more applications is not necessarily better. Target specific jobs and companies as opposed to mass e-mailing hundreds of resumes.
  • Look at the websites of individual companies or agencies that you are interested in. Websites of professional associations are often very useful as well.
  • Do your own search for job sites specific to your discipline or desired career. Sometimes the niche websites that focus on particular industries or majors are more useful. Search (your target industry) job board to find. Many are listed below.
  • If you see a job posting you're interested in on an Internet site, try to go directly to the employer's website and apply directly rather than through the job board.

  • Experiment with several search terms to see the different types of hits you get.
  • When looking for an exact phrase, put it in quotation marks: "chemical engineer"
  • If you are seeking an entry level position, use the term "entry level" plus something related to your field of interest: "entry level" public relations. You may also look for positions with "assistant" or other potential entry-level titles.
  • Use Advanced Search if available to find more specific postings.
  • Look at posting dates, and focus on jobs that were posted recently (within the last 2 weeks). Internship postings sometimes remain open for long periods, so timing is not as important with those.
  • If available, turn on the "LinkedIn Connections" feature to see who you may be connected to at organizations that are hiring.
  • Once you find search terms that work for you, create e-mail alerts if available to be notified of new postings automatically.

A liberal arts degree teaches you many transferable skills that can be applied to a variety of jobs, thus it is difficult to designate sites that are specifically for LAS graduates. Instead we encourage you to look at sites that fit the type of job you are interested in pursuing. These may include sites for jobs in business, in social services, in government and nonprofit organizations, and in the sciences, as well as positions located nationally and internationally. Please also visit the section of our main website with advice about what you can do with different majors: Home » Students » Majors and Careers

If you are overwhelmed, do not despair. Your job search is a process, and we can help! Call Career Services at 312-996-2300 to find out how!
