The Career Peer Mentors (CPM) are UIC students who perform a variety of pre-professional part-time work for the UIC Office of Career Services (OCS) and the UIC Student Employment Office (SEO). CPMs are charged with supporting the misson, vision, and values of OCS and SEO by assisting UIC students with their career development and job search needs.
Applicants should have the following basic qualifications by the 2016-2017 academic year:
Pursuing an undergraduate degree at UIC - all majors welcomed and encouraged!
Registered for at least 6 credit hours at UIC in 2016-2017, federal work study preferred
At least 1 year of work experience preferred (demonstrated leadership through volunteer and/or extracurricular may be considered)
Strong interest in supporting the vision, mission and values of Career Services and Student Employment
A strong desire to mentor and help others, better understand the meaning of professionalism, develop communication and/or presentation skills, promote diversity and inclusion, and self-motivation to define and grow your own career goals.
Under the close supervision and in close conjunction with the manager and supervisor(s), the CPMs typically fulfill the following duties but are not limited to:
Work a minimum of 6-10 hours a week (occasional night and weekend event attendance required) and no more than 25 hours per pay period.
Attend biweekly CPM meetings
Participate in project work that supports Career Services initiatives
Conduct drop-ins for resume and cover letter critiques in Career Services or satellite locations around campus
Introduce students to InterviewStream, and UICCareers.com at drop-in sessions
Review and provide online feedback to student interviews and resumes
Conduct presentations on main services, general career preparation topics (Resume and Cover Letter 101; Basic Interview Tips; Intro to Student Employment)
Participate in outreach efforts and marketing of events, including on social media sites.
Attend and assist with workshops, job fairs, and Career Services events
Promote services at departmental and campus-wide events
Support front desk at Career Services including greeting guests, answering questions, making referrals, scheduling appointments, data entry, etc
Confirm up-coming appointments and conduct student follow-ups
Answer student questions through e-mail and UICCareers.com chat
